About Us

A Safe Place for Animals & the People Who Love Them

We’re not just a shelter—we’re a lifeline. Founded in 1896 in Auburn, New York, we began with a single horse-drawn wagon and a vision of a more humane world. We do everything we can to show up with care, patience, and practical help. We serve Cayuga County and the surrounding areas. People come to us looking for hope—for second chances, for guidance, and that’s exactly what we offer.

Our Mission

Alleviate suffering, improve conditions, & prevent cruelty to animals.

Our Vision

Create a positive world for animals and humans through the power of kindness, compassion, and honesty

The Greater Cayuga SPCA operates as a fully independent humane society. We are not affiliated with the ASPCA or any other humane society or animal welfare group, and we do not receive government funding at the city, county, state, or federal level. The vital programs and services we provide—rescue, medical care, adoption, education, and outreach—exist solely because of donations from generous individuals, businesses, and foundations in our community.

Meet the executive director

Nick Lapresi

With more than 15 years of experience advancing animal welfare, Nick is a dedicated leader committed to developing innovative programs that engage communities and save lives. A graduate of the University of the Pacific's Animal Shelter Management Program, he has built extensive expertise in organizational leadership, strategic communication, systems analysis, humane education, and animal shelter behavior.

Nick's innovative pet retention program has gained national recognition for its impact on keeping pets and families together. The program led to invitations for Nick to serve as a guest speaker for Best Friends Animal Society and has been incorporated into animal welfare management coursework within the University of the Pacific Animal Shelter Management Program curriculum, helping to educate the next generation of animal welfare professionals.

Under Nick's leadership, the Greater Cayuga SPCA was honored as Cayuga County's Non-Profit of the Year in 2024. His contributions to the field were further recognized in 2025 when he was elected to the Board of Directors of the New York State Animal Protection Federation.

Guided by a vision of growth, innovation, and community impact, Nick remains focused on advancing the future of animal welfare, strengthening organizations that serve animals and people alike, and developing creative solutions that improve outcomes for pets, families, and communities.
